Baker Island is a small island about 4 miles southeast of Mount Desert Island. It’s also part of Acadia National Park.
The Baker Island Lighthouse, established in the early 1800s, sits in the middle of the island where it used to mark the southwestern entrance to Frenchman’s Bay. It was a functioning lighthouse until the middle of the last century (see my painting of the lighthouse). There are other buildings on the island, including a keeper’s house and school house.
For such a small bit of land, Baker Island is wonderfully picturesque and I enjoyed painting a number of scenes from my visits.
