George Bellows, Cliff Dwellers, 1913. Oil on canvas. 40 1/4 x 42 1/8 in
If you have a chance to see this exhibit at the MET in New York, don’t miss it. I saw it at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and it was stunning.
Although I’m not a fan of boxing, and therefore not drawn to this subject matter, his renderings of the male body really captures the intensity and physicality of the sport.
I loved his portraits and landscapes. The vivid color on the women’s clothing was luminescent; you want to reach out and feel the soft velvet or shimmery satin.
Many of his paintings, especially the landscapes, surprise you with little glimmers of unexpected color that were utterly captivating.
The exhibit runs until February 18, 2013. Get the details at Metropolitan Museum of Art, or read about the show at Blouin Art Info.
