Somes Sound is the fjord that separates the two halves of Mt. Dessert Island, where I spend the summers. It’s the only fjord on the east coast. Well, it was a fjord, until it was recently downgraded to a fjard–something to do with “lack of extreme vertical topography and oxygen-deprived sediments like the Norwegian fjords.” It was kind of like when Pluto was downgraded from a planet!
Regardless of whether it’s a fjord or a fjard, Somes Sound is a gorgeous piece of water. This painting was inspired by a little corner of the head of the sound, before it opens up into a big body of water.
